The founder, among other things, ran a sawmill there. [Because of Ellis French's many years in the lumber industry, he very likely was employed at the sawmill.] The town existed for some years as a recognized community within Portland's city limits, but has been deteriorating in recent years due to commercial/industrial exploitation. It is located in the southeast corner of Portland, near the current I-205 interchange number 17 (Foster Road and Woodstock Boulevard). There is a fairly large park in the area named Lents Park.
