Notes
a. Note:   In the 1790 Census for Londonderry, Rockingham Co, New Hampshire James Cahoon - 101 - White males over 16 = 1, White females over 16 = 1 Levi White - 0005 - Total persons = 5 (apparently not free whites) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personal correspondance from Kay Morrill: While in Green Lake, I visited the wife of my grandfather's brother looking for the cemetery of some of the relatives listed above. She showed me a letter she had received (unfortunately the letter was undated and the postmark on the envelope was not legible) from someone who gave the following information: "My great great grandfather was James Cahoon (wife's name Nancy Nickols). James and Nancy lived in New York before coming to Green Lake, Wisconsin in the 1840's. James and Nancy's children were William, Joel Dutton, James Alson, Samuel Newell, John N. and Mary. Joel, James Alson, Sam Newell came to Minnesota in 1870's and settled in Elmore, Minnesota--Faribault County. Sam Newell Cahoon is my great grandfather. Mary Cahoon married James Cassidy and lived in the Green Lake Wisconsin area. William Cahoon came to Minnesota in later years and John N. Cahoon married and lived in Iowa and then in Michigan." This lady claimed to have information regarding George Cahoon and Herbert Cahoon, but she did not say anything more in the letter she wrote to the wife of my grandfather's brother. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History of Cattaraugus County, New York Freedom is the northeast corner town of the county. Pioneer settlement: Among those here in 1821 was James Cahoon, on lot 8, fourth range -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transcribed from Portrait and Biographical Album of Green Lake, Marquwette and Waushara Counties Wisconsin, Acme Publishing Co., 1890, pages 274-76. Green Lake is the largest town in the county. It lies on the eastern border, and is bounded on the north by Brooklyn, on the east by Fond du Lac County, on the south by Mackford and Manchester, and on the west by Marquette. This is regarded as the best agricultural town in the county, and it is doubtful if there is a better one in the state. A large portion of the town is prairie, and the soil is of unsurpassed richness. The farm residences are large and tasty, and the barns and outbuildings are such as to be seen in a prosperous farming community. Groves of timber, planted by the settlers, dot the prairies in every direction. Green Lake skirts the northern boundary. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Possible Western New York Land Transactions James Cahoon, 1 Sep 1827, Lot 8, Section Township Range=000604, D=R, Ref-page 513-0072 See references on page 58, 612 and 634 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1830 Census for Cattaraugas Co., NY James Cahoon male age 0-5 = 2 [Joel Dutton Cahoon, James Alson Cahoon] male age 5-10 = 1 [William Henry Cahoon] male age 30-40 = 1 [James Cahoon] female age 5-10 =1 unknown female age 30-40 = 1 [Nancy Dutton Cahoon] Elizabeth Cahoon is also in Cattaraugus Co, possibly his sister --------------------------------------------------------- 150 years of Freedom, 1811-1961 (Freedom, Cattaraugus Co, New York State Census in 1835 Joel Dutton, 1 male, 3 females James Cahoon 6 male, 1 female Samuel Nickles 2 male 3 female --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1840 Census for Cattaraugus Co, NY James Cahoon male age 0-5 = 1 [Franklin Cahoon] male age 5-10 = 2 [John N Cahoon, Samuel Newell Cahoon] male age 10-15 = [Joel Dutton Cahoon, James Alson Cahoon] male age 50-60 = 1 [James Cahoon] female age 0-5 = 1 [Mary Cahoon] female age 20-30 = 1 female age 40-50 = 1 [Nancy Dutton Cahoon] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1850 Census for Green Lake, Marquette Co, Wisconsin (Transcribed census] Residence 201 James Cahoon, 57, male, Farmer, $500, born New York Nancy Cahoon, 47, female, born New Hampshire Alson Cahoon, 20, male, born New York Samuel M Cahoon, 16, male, born New York John N Cahoon, 16, male, born New York Franklin Cahoon, 10, male, born New York Mary A Cahoon, 8, female, born New York Margaret Dutton, 68, female, born New Hampshire [Margaret Dutton must be Nancy Cahoon's mother] [On the same page are Sarah Hamilton and Harriet Marsh, half sisters of Nancy Nichols Cahoon] ------------------------------------------------------------------ in 1856, Green Lake Co was formed from Marquette Co ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wisconsin Census, 1820-90 about James Cahoon Name: James Cahoon State: WI County: Marquette County Township: Green Lake Year: 1855 Page: 013 Database: WI 1855 State Census Index ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Census for Green Lake, Green Lake Co, Wisconsin James Cahoon, Age = 62, male, farmer Nancy Cahoon, Age = 58, female Mary Cahoon, Age = 18, female --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1870 U.S. Federal Census > Wisconsin > Green Lake > Green Lake Indexed as Jerome Colson Residence 54 Jerome Caloon, 70, male, white, farmer, $4000/2000, born New York Nancy Caloon, 67, female, white, born New Hampshire Mary Caloon, 28, female, white, born New York -------------------------------------------------------- Author: Tom Cahoon Date: 3 Oct 2000 Cahoon/Dutton in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York 1821 James Cahoon b. 1798 in NY married Nancy Dutton b. 1802 in NH about 1822. About 1822 James married Nancy Dutton, daughter of Joel Dutton and Margaret Nichols of New Hampshire. She bore him six surviving sons and a daughter, most of whom are known to have been born in Freedom Township, Cattaraugus County, New York. In 1846, the family relocated to a small farm located just south of Green Lake in Green Lake (then Marquette) County, Wisconsin. While the Spring Lake Cemetery is in bad disrepair, the photograph shown is of a tombstone matching that of Nancy Dutton Cahoon's and sits between hers and that of Benjamin Franklin Cahoon, their youngest son who died at the age of just 17. The tombstone is half buried and what is exposed is illegible. Although some records indicate James died in Faribault County, Minnesota, where most of his sons settled (three of them being buried at Riverside Cemetery outside of Elmore), it makes sense that his body would have been returned to Spring Lake Cemetery for burial next to his wife and son. His ancestry is not yet known, except that he was descended from Scotch Irish ancestors. He is thus believed to be the source of the red hair that occurs frequently in his descendants.
