Note: Included in the Quernheim "citizen list" prepared by the French administration on 11 December 1811 (Hann. 74, Diepholz 26): Gerhard Buck, born 4 February 1766, retired soldier. (Birthdates in lists from this document are often quite inaccurate.) He might be the Gerhard Rudolf Buck who was born on 27 November 1765 and confirmed in Lemfrde Parish in 1780. Because the churchbook of Lemfrde Parish was accidentally destroyed in 1961, this hypothesis cannot be investigated, and nothing more can be learned about him. Lemfrde poor-relief registers indicate that he lived in poverty from at least 1818. He was generally referred to as "the poor Gerd Buck." (In the registers, which are intermittent, there are amounts given to the poor Gerd Buck of Quernheim: nearly 2 talers in 1818 and nearly 8 talers in 1820.) Two months before his death, the local pastor and village leaders brought charges in Lemfrde against Gerd's son Johann Heinrich Wilhelm (born in 1801) for, in effect, elder abuse. The pastor describes Gerd as "old, upright, and genial, though often severely challenged by fortune" and says that he is " now a mere shadow" and "an image of the worst human misery and wretchedness."
