a. Note:   f war passed New Hampshire, he was commissioned in another state, a procedure which was repeated until he had seven commoissions. Colonel Gilman was over six and one-half feet in height, of dignified manner and superior intellect. He was one of Washington's most reliable officers. While on a dangerous and important mission he was disabled by a serious accident which barred him from further military service. Washington wrote to him, accepting his resignation with regret and, as a token of esteem for 'A soldier, man and gentleman' presented him withhis own sword." Colonel Gildman retired to Tamworth, NH where he was the first Justice and Selectman for several years. Col. Gilman was present at Major Andre's execution.
