a. Note:   e had been count of Paris, and abbot of St. Martin's of Tours, of Saint Denis, and of St. Germain-des-Pres. Supposedly from his abbot's hood he chose the name "Capet". Though a brave man, he was personally retiring and really held little more power as king than some of his powerful nobles. He was succeeded by his son, Robert I the Pious, who reputedly was so pious that as thieves stole the fringe from his closk while he walked through the city, he never lifted a finger to stop them. He repudiated his first wife, Susanna of Flanders, so he could marry his cousin, Bertha, but was excommunicated by the church for such a consanguineous marriage. This dynasty reached the peak of its power and prestige with the rule of Charles IV who had no sons, the Capetian line ended, and the throne went to colateral branch, the Valois, descendants of the younger son of Phipip III, Charles of Valois.
