Note:   Census Records: 1880 U.S. - Pleasant Valley Township, Grundy County, Iowa 1895 Iowa - Aplington, Monroe Township, Butler County, Iowa - Age 54 1900 U.S.- Aplington, Butler County, Iowa - Storekeeper - Married 30 years Came to United States in 1867 1910 U.S. - Monroe Township, Butler County, Iowa - Age 70 ***** OBITUARY - Aplington, Iowa NEWS - December 17, 1914 George Van Gerpen died Monday morning at about seven o'clock at his home here after an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held from the Baptist church today, conducted by Rev. Koester, with interment in Pleasant View Cemetery. Mr. Van Gerpen was born Dec. 22, 1839 in Geinelt, Ostfriesland, Germany and died Dec. 14, 1914 at the age of 74 years, 11 months and 21 days. He came from Germany in 1866 and lived in Freeport, Ill. for eight years. On April 12, 1870 he married Miss Minnie Rust. They were the parents of eight children, five of whom preceded their father in death. In 1878 he moved to Iowa where he was engaged in farming until 1885 when the family moved to Aplington where they have since resided. Mr. Van Gerpen was engaged in the general merchandise business for about 25 years. Surviving are the widow, three children and one brother Claas Van Gerpen.
