Note: Bill was expected by his parents to become a priest and was educated at St. Joe's Prep, Phila. Several months before graduation he was asked to leave! He was a catcher on a semi-pro baseball team. In both parishes where he lived much of his life (St. Francis deSales & St. Alice's, Upper Darby), he was very active. A favorite was working the Tuesday night dances at deSales, where he introduced his son, Slim, to his future wife. He enjoyed being in the cast of several deSales shows, in which he was an "end man". At one performance he accidentally fell off the stage and continued it in subsequent performances because it was such a hit with the audience. His favorite job was working for the Pennsylvania Railroad, which he lost during the depression. He managed a paint store and was a warehouse foreman for Highway Express. When this operation closed down he had a very difficult time getting another job because he was 58. However he did get work at the Liquor Store of the Philadelphia Navy Yard, which he continued until illness forced him to retire at 75. He was a kind, soft-spoken man whom everyone loved.
