Note: A native of Switzerland, where he spent his boyhood years, and where his parents were born and died. In 1857, he came to this country with his brother, Samuel, and located at Springfield, in this Township. Here he served two years as an apprentice at the carpenter's trade with his brother. In the 1860 Wawaka city, Elkhart Township, IN Census, Pg. 364, shown at age 21, he was living with his brother, Jacob in Wawaka, Elkhart Township, Noble Co., IN who was also a carpenter. He continued at this trade until 1862; then enlisted in Company B, eighty-eighth Indiana Volunteer Infantry (GAR), and served until the close of the war, participating in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Resaca, Chickamauaga and Mission Ridge. In addition to this, had his share of marching, skirmishes, etc. His health being impaired, he engaged in shoemaking in Missouri for two years. In the 1870 Wawaka, Elkhart Township, Noble Co., IN Census, his real estate was valued at $700.00 and his personal estate at $300.00. In 1875, he engaged in butchering for a summer; then after one year in the grocery business, he commenced general merchandising, in which he carried a stock of about $4000.00; being well-adapted to this calling, he became popular. In the 1880 Wawaka, Elkhart Township, Noble Co., IN Census, he is listed at age 43 living with his wife Mary, daughter Millie and sons, William D. and Charles W. (He was probably living close to Gottlieb as there was only a John Thompson family listed between them in this Census. There was also a John Zimmerman family from Switzerland living close by.) He was a member of the Ligonier Lodge, No. 267. I.O.O.F. (same as Gottlieb Schwab). He and his wife are buried at Cosperville Cemetery in Elkhart Township, Noble Co., IN. --------------------------------- Schwab John Frederick, son of John and Anna Schwab, was born at Sislen in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland on May 25, 1838, and died at the home of his son, William in Wawaka, May 26, 1909 at the age of 71 years and one day. About 1858 he and his brother, Samuel, came to America, landing in New York. Soon thereafter he located in the vicinity of Wawaka. He was christened in infancy in the German Reformed Church. He married Mary Ann Lower May 3, 1866. They had 2 sons and 4 daughters. The wife and 2 daughters preceded him in death. He leaves the children, Mrs. John W. Earle of Albion, William, Charles, and Mrs. Dwight W. Hooten of Wawaka; and of the 5 brothers who came to this country, G. Schwab of Albion, Samuel of Windson, Mo.; one sister in Switzerland. He was enrolled in Company B, 88th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was honorably discharged at Washington, D.C. June 7, 1865. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and IOOF. Funeral was May 30. Burial, Cosperville Cemetery. Democrat 6-3-1909
