Note: Notes: Not much is known about Elizabeth D. (Unknown) Spansail other than information I've pieced together from the Civil War Pension File of her son, George Spansail. Apparently in 1851, her husband Jacob Spansail (Sr.) and her son, Jacob Spansail (Jr.) both emigrated to the United States. It appears she heard nothing further from her husband and considered herself abandoned. Her only means of support was income earned by her older children and the little she could do for herself. Her son George emigrated in 1860, and both he and Jacob Jr. sent money to help support Elizabeth and the family. In any case, by 1862 Elizabeth was living in "Monakam, Ober Amt. Calw, Werttemberg Germany". There were several children still at home, but her son's Jacob and George were in the United States. George died in 1863 while serving in Co. A, 105 Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War. In 1874, Elizabeth and her remaining family moved to Pforzheim, Baden Germany. In 1880, Jacob Jr. sent money to pay passage and expenses for his mother Elizabeth to emigrate to the United States and she traveled along with her daughter Catherine and her husband Carl Schaan; arrived 6 July 1880 port of New York; Ship named "England". It appears that when Elizabeth arrived, she resided with Jacob Jr. and family in the New Lebanon area of Genoa Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois. No doubt Jacob Jr. encouraged and helped her file for the "Mother's Pension" of her deceased son, George.
