a. Note:   James Barton is shown as Daniel Barton in his birth record in Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut. James Barton and Daniel Barton are the same person as proven by the following facts.
 1. James Barton's grave marker states he died June 2, 1861, age 71 yrs., 6 mos. Adding 71 years and 6 months, to the November 27, 1789, birth date of Daniel Barton gives a date of May 27, 1861, just six days less than the June 2, 1861, date of death of James Barton. There was not enough space on the grave marker to include the number of days.
 2. James Barton's brother was undoubtedly Joseph Barton, also born in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, and shown in the same vital record. James and Joseph married sisters Tabitha (Dorcas) and Sarah (Sally) Akerley. The sisters are shown in the Akerley family Bible.
 3. Family letters preserved from about 1850 refer to both James and Joseph as uncle, and to their wives as aunt.
  Family letters of the early 1900's indicate that James Barton fought in the War of 1812. His brother Joseph certainly did as shown by the records. There is a record of a Daniel Barton of New York who was a soldier in the War of 1812, but we have not yet searched for the record.
