a. Note:   Smith Barton's grave marker in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, IA, states he was born Dec 19, 1820, and died May 22, 1892. His obituary in the Sentinel, Madison, SD, of May 24, 1892, states he was born in 1820, and died "yesterday, May 23, 1892, at 3:00 p.m." The correct year of birth is 1821, because 1) that is the date written in the family Bible of his brother Walter C. Barton, and 2) an 1820 birth would be slightly less than 9 months after the birth of his brother Asher Barton. For the day of death, we will use the 22rd as per Smith Barton's grave marker.
