Note:   Simeon Barton's death record in Swift County, Minnesota, is in the county death records, Book A, page 48.  It states that he died October 18, 1894, at the age of 70 yrs., 6 mos., 28 days, that he was born in New York, and that his parents were Joseph Barton and Sarah Barton, both born in New York, and that Simeon was a farmer.  The cause of death was heart failure.  His name is spelled Simon in the death record.  Based on his age at death and his date of death, Simeon Barton was born March 20 or 21, 1824, depending on how one does the calculation.

 Simeon Barton's obituary is in the Appleton [MN] Press, Oct 18, 1894. &#160;There is no headline. &#160;It is a paragraph in a column of local news. &#160;It reads as follows:
  "Simeon Barton died at his home in this village at one o'clock this morning. &#160;He retired in usual good health about two hours previously and death came without the least warning. &#160;He was 71 years of age and has been a resident of Appleton during the past six years. &#160;His wife survives him, also three children, E. R. Barton, F. E. Barton and Mrs. W. S. Duncan, all residents of this locality. Deceased was a brother of J. S. Barton of the town of Moyer."

 Notes for the obituary: &#160;E. R. Barton is Ernest Barton. &#160;F. E. Barton is Fayette Eugene Barton. &#160;Mrs. W. S. Duncan is Emogene Barton who married William S. Duncan.
  There is no contradiction between the death record, "at the age of 70 yrs., 6 mos., 28 days," and the obituary "71 years of age." &#160;In those days, after your 70th birthday, you were in your 71st year, hence "71 years of age." &#160;Today we would say "70 years old."

 Simeon Barton's grave is in the Appleton [MN] Cemetery, in Block B, Plot 73B. &#160;The plot has a central monument Barton and Duncan. Simeon Barton's grave is next to his wife's, Frances Lafferty Barton. &#160;The grave stones are red granite. &#160;Simeon Barton's headstone reads as follows:
 <CENTER>Simeon<BR>Dec 21, 1822<BR>Oct 16, 1893</CENTER>
 The death record and the obituary agree on the date of death, October 18, 1894. &#160;The grave marker is a year and two days earlier, October 16, 1893. &#160;Also note that the death record and the obituary can be read that Simeon was born in 1824 whereas the grave marker has a year of birth of 1822. &#160;The grave markers are red granite, which suggests that Simeon's headstone was placed several years after his death. &#160;Apparently the descendant who ordered Simeon's headstone relied on memory rather than records.
