Notes
a. Note:   Lonaconing, Ocean, then Midland. Coalminer, Horseman. 1880 census shows Lonaconing, age 34 as of 6/8/1880. From Paul McGeady's Notes: JOHN P. MC GEADY, OBSERVING THE FACT THAT HE WAS THE OLDEST AND THAT HE WOULD INHERIT TENANT'S RIGHTS TO THE KEELDRUM PROPERTY AND THAT ALONG WITH THE LAND HE WOULD INHERIT THE RIGHT TO MAINTAIN THE NUMEROUS PROGENY OF HIS FATHER, DETERMINED THAT HE WOULD PASS UP OWNERSHIP IN FAVOUR OF MARRIAGE TO NORA DUGAN. UNFORTUNATELY NORA WAS ONLY 15. SUCH A MARRIAGE WAS APPARENTLY FROWNED UPON IN IRELAND SO THEY LATER MOVED TO THE ISLE OF MAN IN 1866. THEY STAYED THERE A WHILE THEN OFF TO CUMBERLAND, ENGLAND, WHERE SEVERAL CHILDREN WERE BORN. AFTER A BRIEF SOJOURN THEY EMBARKED FOR THE U.S.A ON "WISCONSIN, USA" ARRIVING IN NEW YORK JUNE 14, 1873. THEY ENDED UP IN LANNACONNING (ed. Lonaconing) MARYLAND, AFTER A BRIEF VISIT TO THE JOHNSTOWN AREA OF PENNSYLVANIA. HE BECAME A COAL MINER. LETTERS IN YOUR(ed. Jeff Smith's)FATHER'S POSSESSION WILL SHOW THAT JOHN VISITED HIS HALF SISTER, SARAH MCGEADY SMALL, IN LATER YEARS. SHE WAS RESIDING IN PHILADELPHIA, AND REMARKED IN HER LETTERS TO AUSTRALIA THAT JOHN WAS AN EXPERT ON HORSES. DEATH: McGEADY, John P. DEATH: Midland, Md., Jan. 3 Funeral of John P. McGeady. The funeral of John P. McGeady, who died Monday evening, took place from his late residence on Church street Wednesday morning. The funeral cortege proceeded to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, of which he was a devoted member, where a requiem high mass was celebrated for the repose of his soul. After the mass Rev. J. J. Quinn, the pastor, paid a high tribute to the merits of the deceased. His high character, rigid honesty and fervid religious principles, followed by timely suggestions on the need of always being prepared for death being his theme. In the sancutary with Father Quinn Rev. J. J. Brady, of Meyersdale, Pa., and Rev. J. P. Nolan, of St. Mary's, Lonaconing, who knew and loved Mr. McGeady from their childhood. Mr. McGeady was one of the best known and most esteemed citizens of this community. An ardent lover of his adopted country, a favorite expression was "that as long as we adhered to the provisions of the Constitution we could not go wrong." He considered it one of the greatestif not the greatestof all human documents and was thoroughly versed in all its details. He was also a strenuous believer, upholder of the doctrine of complete Independence for Irelandhis native country. Broad minded and liberal in his views, charitable in all things, a good citizen and ardent Christian, he will be sorely missed, not only by his aged life partner and immediate family; but by his host of friends throughout the county. The funeral proceeded after mass by automobile to Lonaconing, where the interment was made in the family lot in St. Mary's cemetery. The pallbearers were: John McMahon, Peter Ennis, Thomas McGraw, William Monohan, John Murphy and Jas P Stakem.
