a. Note:   cle Spence had a reputation of treating his mules well. He had a mule called Jim that he was especially fond of. Jim was a good worker, but he would not allow two people to ride him. One day a friend and I went to Spencer and offered to help clear some land for him. Spence agreed and we took Jim and went out to work. We worked Jim hard all day long pulling stumps. That evening, when the work day was finished, we both got on Jim to ride home. Jim was so tuckered out, he did not protest. We were pleased as punch with ourselves as we rode back to the house, Uncle Spence metus and and thanked us and told us to take Jim to the barn and rub him down and feed him. Then he added very quietly, but very firmly, "I won't be needn' you boys to work anymore."
