a. Note:   tha "Patsey" Stubblefield and father, Samuel Taylor emigrated from Ohio to Iowa. Martin was taken in by Richard E. and Mary Knott and lived with them until he was 17 and enlisted in the Civil War.
  BIOGRAPHY: Martin enlisted in the Union Army Company "K" 1st Iowa Volunteers under a Captain Cook at the age of 17 on April 24, 1861. He was inducted into the Army the following month and the period of his enlistment ended August 21, 186l. At that time enlistments were for ninety days hence the term "90 day wonders". He was mustered out of service in St. Louis and re-enlisted in Company "A" 13th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on September 23,1861as a Third Sargent under Captain J. A. Wilds for a three year period and was mustered into service October 18, 1861 at Davenport, Iowa. He was mustered out in November 1864, re-enlisted and was mustered out of service July 21, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.
 Francis Lewis Taylor, Grandson Bureau of Pensions - Martin was entitled to a pension at the rate of $25.00 per month from September
 7, 1913 and $30.00 from September 7, 1918 and $50.00 from May 1, 1920. BIOGRAPHY: 1870 - Farmer

 Appointment of Guardian for Minor Heirs This day came before Mr. Samuel A. Bissell Judge of Probate in and for the County of Cedar Stephen Taylor and Mary Ann Taylor minor heirs of Samuel Taylor deceased above the age of 14 years and made choice of Charles Swetland of said County to be their guardian.
 And thereupon the said Charles Swetland is appointed guardian for the said Stephen Taylor and Mary Ann Taylor.
 And the said Charles Swetland is also appointed guardian of the following named minor heirs of Samuel Taylor deceased.
 To wit Louis Taylor, Milton Taylor, Martin. V. B. Taylor and Martha Taylor they and each of them being under the age of 14 years.
 In testimony wherof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of December A.D. 1845 S. A. Bissell

 Know all men by these presents that we Charles Swetland principal and J. K. Rickey security are held and firmly bound unto the people of the Territory of Iowa for the use of Stephen D. Taylor, Mary Ann Taylor, Louis Taylor, Milton Taylor and Martin Taylor Martha J. Taylor in the ? sum of Eight hundred dollars good and lawful money to be well and truly paid as witness our hands and seals at Cedar County, this 16th day of December A. D. 1845.
 The condition of this obligation is such that if the bound Charles Swetland who has been appointed guardian for Stephen D. Taylor, Mary Ann Taylor, Louis Taylor, Martin V. Taylor shall faithfully discharge the office and trust of such guardian according to law and shall render a fair and just account of his said guardianship to the Court of Probate for the County of Cedar from time to time as he shall be thereto required by said court and comply with all orders of said court lawfully made relative to the Goods, Chattles and moneys of such minor and render and pay to such minors all moneys, goods and chattles title papers and effects which may come to the hands or possession of such guardian belonging to such minors when such minors shall be thereto entitled or to any such request guardian should such court or direct this obligation shall be void or otherwise in full force and virtue.

 Know all men by these presents that we Charles Swetland Nelson C. Swank are held and firmly bound unto the people of the State of Iowa for the use of Mary Ann Taylor, Stephen Taylor, Milton Taylor, Martin V. B. Taylor and Martha Taylor in the ? sum of five hundred dollars to the payment of which well and truly to be ? we do jointly and severally bind ourselves our heirs executors and administrators sealed with our seals and dated this 10 day of March A. D. 1848.
 The condition of the above obligation 556
 is such that if the above bound Charles Swetland who has been appointed guardian for Mary Ann Taylor, Stephen Taylor, Milton Taylor, Martin V. B. Taylor and Martha Taylor minors heirs of Sam l Taylor dec d late of Cedar Co Iowa shall faithfully discharge the office and trust of such guardian according to law and shall render a fair and just account of his said guardianship to the Court of Probate for the County of Cedar and State of Iowa from time to time as he shall thereto be required by said Court and comply with all orders of said Court lawfully made relative to the goods chattels and money of such minors and render and pay to such minors all moneys goods and chattels title papers and effects which may come to the hands or possessions of such guardian belonging to such minors when such minors shall hereto be entitled or to any subsquent guardian should such Court so direct this obligation shall be void or otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
