Note: John and Gertrude left Germany and immigrated to America in 1909. They left Hamburg, Germany on August 19, 1909 and arrived in New York City, New York, USA on September 10, 1909. They boarded a train to Kentucky and settled on a farm in Ottenheim, Lincoln County, Ky. Also making this journey was the family of August Ridder, a cousin of the Sabels. They were joining August's brother Henry in Kentucky. John left his family to find work in the eastern Kentucky coal mines before 1923. He sent money home to his family in Ottenheim. The family raised chickens and sold eggs. Mary Sabel Shidler says that they got about 30 dozen eggs per day. Because there was no electricity on the farm, John put in a "delco plant" to produce electricity for lights in the chicken house. The lights would come on in the middle of the night and trick the chickens into thinking it was daylight. This caused them to produce more eggs all year round. The family built a huge chicken house and John developed a hernia from the strenuous labor. He died from a strangulated hernia. The local doctor would push it back in and bind him but eventually this did not work. John was transported to Louisville in the back of a truck, lying on a mattress, for surgery at Baptist Hospital. The doctors said that if he had come in sooner they could have saved him. He died of peritonitis at the age of 56. !REFN Obituary, The Interior Journal Stanford, Lincoln Co., Kentucky Tuesday, May 19, 1931 p1 c5 Good Citizen Passes Lincoln county was made poorer Wednesday, when Mr. John Sabel, Sr., aged 56, a well-to-do farmer of the Ottenheim section, died in the Kentucky Baptist Hospital in Louisville, after undergoing a major operation.
