Notes
a. Note:   d say, only 4 more years til the pony comes, etc. until they broke down and gave her a pony for her 9th birthday. He was named Goldie and he was kept in little barn built on the back of the garage. They lived in Niagara Falls but it was not the busy and touristy place it is now and they had a very large yard. She went to Bishop Stan Private school in Toronto for a few years but came back and finished her last two years of high school at Niagara Falls Collegiate. She and Ab were in the same class and they went out but not exclusively. Both Ab and Urna went off to Toronto and the University. He is dentistry, she in Pharmacy. She and her father went to Europe the summer of 1934 on the Duchess of Athol. They toured England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland and then returned on the same ship but by tourist class not first class. Urna said the return voyage was way more fun than the outward trip. After the birth of her boys she had gone shopping one week-end in Toronto and when she returned on asked what she had bought she said, a gown, shoes and a purse and a horse. The horse was Cavalier. He arrived by train the next week but he was not a good traveler and no-one wanted to get this frisky and upset horse off the train. Urna had to lead him. She kept him at MacPersons and rode at the fair grounds. They built a cottage down on the Bay of Quite in the mid 50's and Urna and the boys spent the summers there. It was only 12 miles from town so Ab was out most nights. They always had power boats of some description and the boys learned to handle boats and ski and even kite fly behind boats. They sold the cottage in the early 80's long after the boys were gone from home, in fact I can remember going for a very bumpy boat ride when Carolyn was overdue hoping it might "shake" her out. It didn't. After Abs death, she sold the big house and moved into a condo on Centre Street down by the river for the next 8 years. After the death of her best friend she was finally persuaded to move nearer one of the boys and Peterborough was chosen. In March 1996 she was diagnosed with throat cancer. She had radiation treatment and is still (99) cancer free. In October 2001 Urna 's cancer returned and she now had rectal cancer. She had radiation at Princess Margaret for only a week as she very frail. She was hospitalized over Christmas and moved into Fairhaven Nursing Home in January. She never really recovered her strength and died Saturday March 9th 2002. She was cremated and a family gathering was held in Peterborough at her son's, Randolph's home. She was buried in Napanee on Mother's Day with just her sons and their wives and Jack and Bruce Macpherson in attendence.
Note:   Urna was the oldest child of Gordon & Clara Troup. Her mother caught her at 3 years old out on the road rubbing a horses legs and from that time said she wanted a pony. Her mother said you had to be 10 to have a pony. Every birthday she woul
