Note: itnessed. His parents were working in turpentine fields at the time of his birth. His father was a millwright and mother housewife. Notes from John stated that his maternal aunt Zylpha took him away from his maternal family who had taken him from his father who was raising him in the swamps of Florida after his mother passed and brought him up to Norfolk, Va. to live with she and her husband. John also said that before Zylpha got custody of him that he had lived with a black sharecropper and that they called him Toby. He also said that at the age of 12 he accidentally shot another kid while playing with a shotgun; unfortunately the other kid died. Camille recalls that her mother had custody of John when his maternal family came and got him at around age four. She said her mother Helen always cried when she told the story of how she had dressed him in a little sailor suit before they took him away. She also said that Helen never got over losing "Toby" and that they searched for years trying to locate him. He was a Korean War veteran.
