She was raised on a dirt-poor homestead in dust-swept southern Kansas. Enduring poverty most of her early life, after her marriage at 22, she went through more hardscrabble times with her husband who was 12 years older. As she aged, Louise was burdened by obesity and arthritis, but she lived to be 88, the real matriarch of her family.
