D. was the most prominent of three brothers who became Methodist preachers. In fact, it was his conversion to Christ in his late teens that led him to bring his older brother Herman into the ministry. His younger brother, Percy, had started as an evangelist at age 14. Hubert was widely known for oratory from the pulpit and raising money for the Methodist church. He co-founded Southern Methodist University in Dallas about 1913. He retired from the pulpit in 1934 and spent the last 20 years of his life, raising money for the church and retired preachers. Hubert was the most successful businessman in the family, helping to support some of his siblings. He invested and owned real estate. He died of prostate cancer just before his 82nd birthday.
