Obituary for David Gipe: Keystone 14, Feb. 1923 (as transcribed by Theresa Payne) The remains of David Gipe were brought back from Groton, SD, arriving here Sunday morning. After the services at the mortuary conducted by Rev. James of Elberon, the body was laid to rest in Keystone Cemetery Sunday afternoon. Very little is known of the antecedents of Mr. Gipe. He was born in Illinois Dec. 1847 and died Feb. 6 at the age of 76 years and 10 months. He came to this community upwards of 40 years ago and remained a resident here until about 14 months ago, when, because of failing health, was taken to Groton to live with his daughter, Mrs. Ella Spencer. His wife died about 12 years ago and following her death, he continued to live with his adopted daughter. For a number of years, he followed his trade of mason and bricklayer throughout this part of the county and was well known to most of the residents. He later established a barber ship here and for a time officiated as central operator of the town telephone system. He was a well-known character of the town and was liked by all who knew him. He was the father of four children, Mrs. Ella Spencer of Groton, SD; Mrs. Dora Thomas and John Gipe of Cedar Rapids; and Sadie Tillis, whose residence is unknown. Among those here for the funeral services were his daughters Ella and Dora, son John and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Seltrick, the latter an adopted daughter from Cedar Rapids.
