In the 1870 census, he is living near his family, working for the Daniel Whittemore family and is listed as a farmhand. In the 1880 census, he is back at home, living with George and Elizabeth Gipe, his sister Rohanna, and neice Mary E. Gipe. The 1910 census (5 Ward Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois: T-624, roll 332, part 1, page 198a) is transcribed as follows: 717 South Second Street: Gipe, Jacob, head, male, white, 58, married - 2, 5 years, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, English, laborer - odd jobs, worker, no, 7 months, cannot read or write, rents a house. - - - -, Viola, wife, female, white, 48, married - 2, 5 years, 9 children born/7 living, Iowa, United States, United States, English, none, cannot read or write. The household also contains three children identified as Step Children to the head of household. These include: Mary Church - 12, born Iowa, Annie Church - 9, born Iowa, and Amos Church - 19, born Iowa. Their father's place of birth is stated as "United States." Jacob Gipe was married twice, according to the 1910 census. In Bureau County, Illinois there are records of a Margaret Gipe and children in the County Farm. This includes two children, Frank and Minnie. Records exist in Rock Island County, Illinois for the period of 1899 - 1901. These include references to the death of a 16 year old Frank Gipe in 1899 and guardianship records for a Minnie GIPE. It is speculated that these are the children of Jacob Gipe, but this has yet to be proven. Minnie Gipe was granted in guardianship to the William McLean Stewart family, but appears to have lived with Jacob and Mary E. Stewart in Moline, Rock Island, Illinois. She is found with the family in 1900 and 1910, listed as Minnie Stewart.
