a. Note:   Helen A. Lanners, age 96 of Salem, SD died Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at the Beverly Healthcare Center, Salem, SD. Helen Agnes Raue was born on a farm near Salem, South Dakota on February 28, 1905 to the late Henry Raue and Lena Mary Heying. She was raised in the Salem area and after completing High School, taught country schools in McCook County for two years. Helen then attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Mitchell, South Dakota where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She worked as the McCook County Nurse for a couple years before working in North Platte, Nebraska and Spokane, Washington among other places. On June 4, 1940 she married John "Jack" Lanners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem, South Dakota. Jack and Helen farmed southwest of Salem until 1979 when they retired and moved to Salem. Jack died December 4, 1983. Helen is survived by her two sons; Michael of Laguna Hills, California, and Edward of Loveland, Ohio; two grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law; Mrs. Fern Raue, Salem, SD; and Mrs. Marcia Raue, Walnut Creek, CA; and host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, four brothers; Henry (Slim), Ruben, Edward, John Henry (Short), and two sisters; Alice, who died in infancy, and Alice Elizabeth (Mrs. Willard Keefe).
