In 1930 he was again in Jefferson County–Ozawkie–living with his sister Mollie and her husband Robert Metzger, and working as a builder. Joe died March 31, 1946 according to another researcher.

 JOSEPH WILLIAM “Joe” SALES– b: August 06, 1871 in Jefferson Co., Kansas; Joe never married according to 1930 census record. In 1891 he traveled west on the Oregon Trail with his family, but wasn’t content in Oregon, and followed the trail back to Iowa by himself, the following spring, riding one horse and leading a pack horse. I haven’t been able to find out what he did, or where he lived for the next 40 years, but by 1930, when he was 58, he was again in Jefferson County (Ozawkie), Kansas, living with his sister Mollie and her husband Robert Metzger, and working as a builder. Joe died March 31, 1946, and was buried at Ozawkie Cemetery with his parents and other members of his family.
