a. Note:   Earl Adkins died in the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was admitted to the Hospital on 12-26-1979, He was suffering from lung cancer, Emphysema, Chronic bronchitis, Pneumoconiosis, Heart disease, Diabetes mellitus. He died on 12-29-1979 at 1:15 PM. He would have been 58 on 1-03-1980. Harlan Daily Enterprise December 30, 1979 Earl Adkins Dies; Rites Set Tuesday The Rev. Earl Adkins, 54, Elcomb, died Saturday in Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital after a long illness. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Church of God of the Free People, Harlan Gas. Burial will be in the Fee Cemetery, Rose Hill, Va., with the Rev. Willard Jones and the Rev. Robert Grubbs officiating. In addition to his wife, Kathleen, he is survived by his mother Flora (Roberts) Adkins, also surviving were 13 children, Earlene Hammons, Debbie Collett, Kieth KY; Patsy Tipper, Shirley Vanbonn, Mich; Troy Adkins, Teetersville KY; Lonnie dkins, Gulston KY; Frank, Jimmy, Kathy, Glenda, Pauline, Wanda, and Joey of Elcomb KY; And 10 grandchildren. Also surviving were three brothers Bill Adkins, Texas; Damon Adkins, Ohio; Raymond Adkins, Harlan; And a sister, Charlene Langley, Harlan. Pallbearers were Charles Walker, David Adkins, Pete Milwee, Don Hammons, Allen Collett, Ralph Collett and Dennis Roark. The body is at the home. Rich Funeral Home was in Charge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1930, Earl was five years old, living in a town called Back Creek, Bell County Kentucky. Living in the house was is father and mother, his brother William (Bill) and his Grandfather Frank Roberts. Also living in the house was a servant. Pruden, Kentucky.- Earl was born January 3, 1925. He was named Earl Roberts, born in Red Ash, Whitley County, Kentucky. His mother Flora Roberts was not married at the time she had Earl, she was living at home with her mother and father. It is unknown who his father is. Some family members remember that his father worked for the railroad, as did Flora's dad in 1925.Earls children was told that his father was a White. Red Ash, Kentucky is a very small town on the Kentucky and Tennessee border. There is nothing left of the town but a church and two cemetery's. Earls mom married William Adkins on July 4, 1926 in Campbell County, Tennessee. In 1927 they had their first son that was named after his father William, everyone called him Bill. He was born in Jellico, Tennessee. After that Earl and his family moved to Bell County, Kentucky, a small town called Pruden Ky. There Earls brother Charles (Cotton) was born in 1930. Sometime after April in 1930 and before May 1934, Earls family moved to Harlan County, Kentucky. They first lived in Bardo, where Damon was born. Both Charlene and Raymond were born in Harlan County. On September 25, 1934, Earl was enrolled in school at Bardo. On January 10, 1934, Earl was enrolled in school at Elcomb and on December 13, 1939, he was enrolled in Green Hill, School at Bledsoe, Kentucky. Sometime around 1940, Earl and his family moved to Teetersville, Ky. This is where he was living when he joined the army. He was only 15 at the time. He lied about his age to get in the army. After he joined the army his dad and mom moved to Elcomb Ky. Sometime after he joined the army he married a Flora E. Baxter. He divorced her after he was discharged from the army. They were divorced in Jefferson Co., Kentucky. There may have been children from this marriage, if there was they were not born in Kentucky. The divorce was final on January 6, 1946. No children were mention in divorce degree. Earl enlisted in the army on August 21, 1940, in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was honorably discharged from the army on November 15, 1945. He received several medals, Meritorious Unit Emblem, American Defence Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, ( which was a three star bronze medal), Army of Occupation Medal, ( with a Germany Clasp), Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a W.W.11 Honorable Service Lapel Button. Earl enlisted in the National Guard Army, in Harlan County, on April 10, 1947, he served to October 25, 1949. He also received a Honorable Discharged from the National Guard Army. Earl and Kathleen were married on September 14, 1946 in Pineville, Bell County, Kentucky. They stayed in Harlan County until after Kathleens dad died in 1966. Then Earl moved his family to Michigan, where he and Kathleen both worked in factories. They stayed there for three or four years and then moved back to Harlan. Earl continue to work at driving trucks until he was to sick from the cancer to do anything. His last job was for Jim Rich, taking care of coal trucks for him, Frank, Jim, Troy and Lonnie all drove a truck for him. He also liked to talk on cb radio's, his cb handle was Papa Bear, Kathleen was Mama Bear and Joey was Baby Bear.
