Note: We have checked Marion, Marshall, Ohio and Taylor Counties in WV and there is no birth record for George Crawford Johnson in either of them. The Birth Registration for George Crawford Johnson lists his place of birth as Cameron, WV with father George Clinton Johnson and mother Hannah Elizabeth McCue. This registration was filed with the US Department of Commerce Bureau of Census on 23 Oct 1940. A certificate of church membership was issued to George C. Johnson from the New Providence Methodist Church of New Providence, NJ on 14 Nov 1943. A certificate of church membership was issued to George C. Johnson from Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church on 10 Feb 1952. George got Verna Sandbeck her first job as a telephone operator. From a newspaper clipping: Johnson Heads School Board New Providence, NJ George C. Johnson of Mountain Ave. was elected president of the New Providence Board of Education last night in a meeting in Lincoln School. (Intentionally left some out.) Johnson has served on the board since September, when he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Herbert D. Taylor. Johnson was elected to a one-year unexpired term at the school elections last month. A resident of the borough for the last eight years, he has been active in scouting and PTA affairs. Johnson was chairman of the citizens' committee for school expansion in 1948 and was defeated in running for the board that year. He is a supervisor with the Long Lines Division of the American Telephone and Telegraph Co., NY. George was a member of Anchor Lodge No. 149 F & A M. (Free Masons) of Plainfield, NJ. On George C. Johnson's retirement membership card his height was listed as 5 feet 8 inches with blue eyes and brown hair. The death notice in the A T & T news bulletin stated: George C. Johnson, 66, died Oct. 18. He was a retired circuit layout supervisor from Headquarters engineering in Cincinnati. In some old papers which Agnes collected George's death date is listed as October 18, 1971. The services were held at Anderson Hills Community Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Bumgarner officiating. The interment was at Alpine Cemetery, Perth Amboy, NJ. The death certificate also shows the death date as 18 Oct 1971 with the cause of pulmonary emphsema. It states that he died in the Good Samaritan Hospital, the date of birth was 27 Sep 1905 in WV, he worked for the American Telephone Company, his occupation was engineer, his father was George C. Johnson, his mother was Hannah McCue. The burial date was 21 Oct 1971 with T. P. White & Sons the Funeral directors of Cincinnati, OH. An annoucement printed in the Anderson Hills church bulletin about the service stated that the Johnson's came to Cincinnati in 1964. The book which lists the family members and other guests who attended the funeral service for George C., shows that he was born in Grafton, WV. The family listed were Bob and Jim and their families and Bob and Verna Sandbeck and Hertha Gunkel. This book also lists the flower memorials from Shirley Johnson; Pauline, Mary Charlotte & Joan; Ruth & Bob Hummel; and George & (blank) McElwee. Pauline is the daughter of Ida and Charles Hipsley. We think Mary Charlotte & Joan(Jo Anne) are Pauline's children. Ruth is the daugther of Ida and Charles Hipsley. Ruth married George Oscar Hummel and they had a son, George Robert (Bob) Hummel. George McElwee married Thelma La Rie Johnson, the daugther of Theodore Johnson. A funeral annoucement for George C. Johnson states: George C., beloved husband of Agnes C. Johnson (nee Hansen), devoted father of Robert H. and James H. Johnson, brother of Miss Shirley and Harry Johnson, also four grandchildren; Monday, October 18, 1971; residence, 7034 Moorfield Dr. Memorial service at Anderson Hills United Methodist Church, Wednesday, October 20, at 7:30 p.m. Family prefer memorials to Anderson Hills United Methodist Church or Hamilton County Respiratory Association. The cost of the portion of the funeral which was handled by T. P. White and Sons in Cincinnati was $1,555.43. The cost of the portion of the funeral which was handled by Flynn and Son Funeral Homes in Perth Amboy was $542. The cost of the grave marker was $150. Jo Anne Williams Shields is sending Bob the leather football helmet which George Crawford wore when he played for Drexel Institute. Bob says he remembers his father, George Crawford, told him that George would go to PA and get raw crude oil out of the ground and put it in their cars. The oil was so pure that it did not damage the vehicles.
