a. Note:   Most of the evidence is that Richard worked as a brakeman for the B&O Railroad. The 1880 and 1920 census records list his occupation as "brakeman,"and his death certificate says "yard brakeman," but the 1900 census has it as "railroad conductor." The 1887 death certificate of his daughter, Mary Kate, says he was a "fireman, NCRR."
