Note: (Research):My Dad told me a story about William Fletcher Gazaway. The story tells how Grandpa Gazaway had arrived in Arkansas and began building a house and fences on the property he thought he was homesteading. A man came by and told William that he was on his property. After that William Gazaway disappeared for several years. When he came back he bought a very large farm ( a couple thousand acres) and paid in full with gold. No one knows where the gold came from. Later he disappeared for awhile again and came back with his wife, a couple of kids and his in-laws. Information from Christine Harris Gibson 3699 Doral St. Palm Harbor, FL. 34685. cgibson777@msn.com. Information as of Feb 2005. Oral history I Samuel Weldon have is William and Cyntha and family purchased some land in KS. They left and went to KS. where they found another family proving up on the property so they stayed long enough for Elva Lucinda to be born and they joined their in-laws in Johnson County, OK. Another story I have is during the war between the states William was working in the field and some union soldiers came up looking for a means to cross the AR. River. They threatened William if he did not help them and he agreed to take them to a boat so they could cross the river. Cyntha was bringing William his lunch and she seen what was hapening so she hid and followed them as William took the soldiers to a place on the river where a rowboat was stored. Some of the soldier wanted to kill William but the officer in charge wouldn't let them because William had helped them. After the soldiers rowed across the river William was so upset he couldn't work the rest of the day. These storied was given to me by Williams ggrand son Robert Dale Burns Rt 1 Box 76C Altus, AR. 72821 in 1988.
