Sandberg"> Martin gave his birthday as Sept 22, but his birth certificate says Sept 23. That's when the birth was registered in the government office in Coronation. He was born at home on the farm on Sept 22, 1912. Ruth Taylor said Martin would never go along with the rest of the family, and "got lots of lickin's". He avoided going to church. Martin ran away to Stettler when he was about 14, then arrived in the Peace River country about 1931, where he met and married Annie Stephens. Denzel and Dale were born in Sexsmith, Alberta. On Jan. 6, 1941, Martin enlisted as a Private in the <a href="http://capitalnet.com/~rcasc/rcaschm.html" target="new"> Royal Canadian Army Service Corps</a> at Edmonton, Alberta. He trained at Camp Borden, Ontario, then got shipped overseas, where he seems to have spent about two years stationed at Brighton before being sent to Sicily and Italy. He served as a truck driver and mechanic with the First Canadian Armoured Brigade. According to one of his letters to Aunt Verna, it sounds as though his job was delivering fuel and ammunition to the front lines. Martin spoke very little of his wartime experiences, and claimed not to remember 1943 and 1944, when he served in Sicily and Italy. He said he woke up in a Military Hospital in England in 1944 with limited recollections of the previous couple of years. He met Gwen Whitten, and had two children, Mick and Val, by her during his time in the UK. Martin was discharged to return to civilian life on Sept. 26, 1945, and was decorated with the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Italy Star, the France-Germany Star and the Defence Medal. He met Cynthia while they were both working as civilians at the Jericho base in Vancouver; he as a carpenter, and she in the secretarial pool. They met socially, but when Cynthia ended up in hospital with a broken pelvis after a car accident while returning from a ski trip to Mt. Baker, Martin visited her in hospital, and they began dating on her release. Tim and Nick were born in Vancouver. Ruth Taylor commented that "every ten years or so, Martin would show up with a new family." Martin Sandberg spent much of his life in Prince George, British Columbia, where he worked as a carpenter, and later as resident manager of 3 sections of land, where he raised cattle, pigs, poultry and grew hay.
