Notes
a. Note:   The 1850 Knox Co, OHIO, Jackson TWP census shows John's birthplace as Pennsylvania. The 1880 census for Urias Dillon Thompson listed his father as born in Maryland. This conflict was solved when I discovered that Pennsylvania and Maryland shared a border. Cousin Carol Griggs suggests that John was born in Baltimore County, Maryland. The research continues.
Daughter Sarah was born in 1859 in Ohio and daughter Melissa was born in Indiana in 1861. John W. and his family are not found in the 1860, this suggest that the family was moving from Ohio to Indiana during the time of the Census and were not included in the count.
The death certificate for Stephen M. Thompson lists his parents as John THOMPSON and his mother as Rachel HALL; Sarah E. Thompson Warren's obituary gives the names of her parents as John and Rachael Thompson.
From a doctor's report in John W's Civil War Pension records we learn that John was a light complected, medium-sized man, between five foot seven and eight inches. He served for six months in the late War of the Rebellion of 1861 as a Private in the 59th Regiment Indiana Volunteers. He was drafted on the 10th day of January 1865, mustered out on August 31, 1865. Admitted to Hospital Hilton Head, SC, April 11, 1865 and transferred north May 7, 1865. Admitted to Mower General Hospital, Chestnut Hill, near Philadelphia, PA, May 19, 1865. Tranferred again June 29th, 1865.
John W. received a pension for the following afflictions: chronic diarrhea and inflamation of both eyes with granulated eyelids and a watery discharge; his vision was impaired and was unable to perform more than two-thirds of his time in manual labor as a wagonmaker. For these afflictions, he was paid a pension of $4.00 a month. Thru repeated applications for an increase and many depositions from family, friends, neighbors, and doctors, his pension was increased to $8 a month. Because he died leaving a child under the age of 16, his widow received a pension of $12 a month.
