a. Note:   In 1841, James and Mary were living at Corney Hill, Quernmore, Lancaster with their children Oliver, Thomas, Ellen, & Mary. Corney Hill was on the North side of Clough/a Road. A niece of Mary's - Nancy Brogden was also living with them- she was the daughter of Mary's sister Elizabeth. William Gibson was working as an agricultural labourer for the family. In 1851, James and Mary were living at Corney Hill and James was described as being a Famer of 90 acres and employing 4 agricultural labourers. Oliver and Thomas were working as farm labourers for their father and Mary Ann was at school. A niece Harriet Tennant was living with the family working as a servant and there were two other servants working for the family. Ellen wasn't listed as living with the family. By 1861, James the head of the family had died and Mary had taken over the running of the farm at Corney Hill. They now had 85 acres and Oliver, Thomas and Mary all worked on the farm to support their mother and themselves. John and Isabelles son Thomas was also staying with the family and attending school and there two servants- a carter and a dairy maid.
