On April 24, 1855, Samuel at age 78, from Pike Co, IL files for a warrent of bounty land. He swears under oath that he was: "a private in the Company commanded by Capt. Willima Spencer in the block house forces of Riflemen commanded by Major John Vauter in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June, 1812. That he was known as a minuteman or scout during the Spring and Summer of 1813 and was called into actual service on or about the first day of May A.D. 1814 in Dearborn County in the State of IN for the term of three months and continued in actual served in said war for the term of about three months and was honorably discharged at Lawrenceburgh in Dearborn Co in the State of IN on or about the first day of August A.D. 1814 as will appear by the muster rolls of said company he having never received a written discharge."
His petition was denied since his name did not appear on the roles of the company. His file designation at GSA is "Purcell, Samuel: Priv; Buvt 111166 Rej 1855 -- 1812"
His will was written March 27 1847 in Pike County, IL but probate (13 years later) was in Marshall Co, IA. Probate lists Joel Purcell as son.
