Note: The 1870 Federal Census lists a one year old "elizabeth" living with Alexander C. and Ruth Darne. Her brother is Thomas F., age 4. Elizabeth has property valued at $1500. She was born in Maryland. According to the 1880 Federal Census, Sarah E. was 11 years old and was born in Maryland of parents born in Maryland. According to the 1900 Federal Census, Sarah E. was married to Daniel for 16 years; she was born September 1868 and was 31 years old. Her parents were Virginian [conflicting with other sources stating they were from Maryland]. She had three children, all living at the time of the census. She could read and write, and spoke English. The 1910 Federal Census shows Sarah E. living with her husband Daniel W. Cole. They have been married 25 years. She is the mother of 3 children; all 3 living at time of Census (Gertrude would die of TB the following year). Sarah is 41 years old. She and her parents are shown as being born in Maryland. Sarah's death certificate is hard to read, so I cannot determine the cause of death. She was treated by a doctor for about 8 days before she died, and "exhaustion" was a contributing factor. She is described as a widow, a housewife, and her parents are A.C.H. Darnes and "Thursday Va. Hall". They were born in Maryland, and Sarah was born in Darnestown, Md.
