Note: Irish Edition of Alexander ban Donaldson: Our Ancestor 1691-1776. ByRon Donaldson, p272 "Donaldson, Alexander 1814 -12 Apr 1859 at the age of 24 in 1840married Bridget McElroy age 22 in the town of Newtownhamilton. The marriage settlement decreed all sons to be Protestant and all daughters to beRoman Catholic. The McElroys are an old line Catholic family in Armagh. In early 1840 they boarded the ship "Andromanche" and set out forAustralia. On the immigration list Bridget's residence was given as Creggan. Shewas a dairymaid, could not read or write and was Catholic. Alex was from Newtowhamilton, Co Armagh. He was a farmhand, could bothread and write and was a Protestant (Presbyterian). As a possible connection, Jane Donaldson born 1771 granddaughter ofAlex Ban married a P. McElroy. Alex, her son who went to Australia in 1853, was probably related to the other McElroys. On 21 Jun 1840 they arrived in Melbourne and went straight to the areaof Purdeet, Mount Rouse, Victoria. The place they went was to that ofanother Alexander Donaldson, whom we feel certain was a cousin of Alex. Itseems evident that this Alex who was the first leasee of the land in 1844(called Longlands) corresponded with or sent for his relatives to come. In1849 the original Alexander died at age 32 showing them to be almost the sameage and probably also were close cousins. In 1859 the second Alexander Donaldson died at age 44 of softening ofthe brain. He was ill for about 2 weeks. At this time he was Innkeeper of the Bunyip Inn, Hamilton, Victoria. After his death Bridget managed the place. As a note of interest, the Hamilton Courier reported, II James McNamara sued Bridget Donaldsonfor appropriating his check while drinking nobblers in the Bunyip Inn. Herson Ian's (Ian is Scottish for John) evidence persuaded Police Magistrate Cuthbert Fetherstonbaugh to dismiss the case. On 28 Dec 1900 Bridget McElroy Donaldson died aged 81 of edema of thelungs, aneurism of mitral and aortic valves of the heart. She was ill 3 weeksand died at Eurongella, 9 Evansdale Road, Hawthorne, Bourke County." P 273 "In loving memory of Alexander Donaldson, who died at Cavendish,Western District, 12-4-1857 aged 39.
