a. Note:   Starting as a cub reporter, Frederick ultimately became a featurewriter for both The Toronto Daily Star and the Toronto Star Weekly. Hewas a reporter for 30 years. As their War Correstondent he wasoverseas for five years covering nearly every phase of Canada'sfighting forces, including Dunkirk, Dieppe, Sicily, Italy, D-Day andNorthwest Europe. He is a member of Canadian Newsreporters Hall ofFame, inducted in 1977 and was the author of two books, "Soviet Scene"and "Variety Show". Before coming to Canada in 1912 he had been ajunior master in a boy's grammer school in Ireland. First job inCanada was in the basement of Eaton's, a large department store. On the night of Victor Ernest Griffin's death, back home in Toronto,Fred and his mother heard a knock at the door of the apartment. WhenFred went to answer there was no one at the door. He returned to theroom and later there was a second knock at the door. Again Fredanswered but there was no one present. Once more he returned to theroom and even later again there was a third knock at the door. Hedutifully answered once more to the same result of no one there. Theknocks ceased but the following day they received news that Victor hadbeen killed while on duty.
