a. Note:   Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, was the oldest son of Thomas Howard, the third Duke of Norfolk. He was the scion of an old aristocratic family, and both his father and his mother had royal ancestors. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, were among Henry VIII's six wives--and both of them were executed. At the age of thirty, Surrey was also executed on a spurious charge of treason. In fact, he was the last person to be executed during the reign of Henry VIII. His father, the Duke of Norfolk, was spared only because King Henry died before the order of execution could be carried out, or Henry VIII reprieved him. ==== In 1546 Thomas Howard, the third Duke of Norfolk and his son Henry Howard, earl of Surrey, were charged with treason. Surrey was executed, but Norfolk was saved by the death of the king. He was released (1553) from prison on the accession of Mary I and restored to his dukedom. === Howard, Henry. First Earl of Surrey 1517 -1547. English poet and soldier remembered for his sonnets and his translations of two books of Virgil's Aeneid. In 1547 he was falsely charged with treason and executed. === Surrey, Henry Howard, earl of, 1517 -1547, English poet; son of Thomas Howard, 3d duke of Norfolk. His irascibility and continuous vaunting of his descent from Edward I resulted in his imprisonment on several occasions. Eventually he was convicted of treason on a trumped-up charge and executed. He introduced blank verse to English in translating two books of Vergil's Aeneid. Along with his friend Sir Thomas Wyatt, he popularized the Petrarchan sonnet form in English. He was the only poet mentioned on the title page of the well-known miscellany (1557) of Richard Tottel. is NOT responsible for the content of the GEDCOMs uploaded through the WorldConnect Program.
