Note: OBITUARY October 4, 1972 "Miami Herald" Miami, Florida Roger B. Whitaker, 62, of Virginia Gardens passed away on October 3, 1972 at his home of cancer. He was born on August 17, 1910 in Solon, Ohio. After completing high school, he studied flying and earned his wings in 1930. He worked for various charter cargo airlines before joining National Airlines in 1940. During World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps and after the war, he returned to National. On December 10, 1958, he commanded the first domestic jet flight when National inaugurated New York to Miami service. He was a member of American Pilot's Association and Explorers Club of Miami. He is survived by his wife, Josephine; three sons, Jeffry Whitaker, Roger Whitaker, and Robert Whitaker; two daughters, Martha Walton and Nancy Whitaker; and eight grandchildren. Rosary services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Slades Funeral Home. Following cremation, his ashes will be scattered over Fowery Rock offshore. The family requests memorials be made to American Cancer Society.
