Note: n putting together my genealogy I find that I am descended from Robert Brooke and Mary Mainwaring. There are several Mary Mainwarings and at first I made a similar mistak and had to struggle to sort things out. The Mary Mainwaring that married Robert Brooke is the daughter of Roger Mainwaring DD, Bishop of St. David's who is quite well known for his defense of "the Rights of Kings." the Mary Mainwaring who married Benjamin Gill was the daughter of Oliver Mainwaring and Margaret Torbock. That Mary Mainwaring was a decendent of Most of the English Kings from William the Conqueror through Edward I "Longshanks" Plantagenet. I spent much, much time researching that line only to find out it wasn't my line. Mary Mainwaring who married Gov. Robert Brooke MAY go back through the Mainwarings to William and then Randle Mainwaring, I've seen it in trees but have seen no evidence of it. However Gov. Robert Brook through his mother does go back to some of the nobles of England and on to the Scottish kings and on to King Alfred the Great of England, to Alan of Galloway, Constable of Scotland mentioned in the Magna Charta. Alan of Galloway's great-grandfather Fergus, Lord of Galloway was married to Isabel/Elizabeth the illigitimate daughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" of England, the son of William the Conqueror, King of England. Isabel/Elizabeth is listed as "probably" the mother of Uchtred of Galloway, Alan's grandfather. Ann Brooke (not the daughter of the Gov. but the g-granddaughter of the Gov.) married a descendent of Mary Mainwaring and Benjamin Gill so they have a very interesting tree that would include about 9 or 10 of the 25 Barons who were the Magna Charta Sureties, King John of England who was king at the time, and two or three other people mentioned in the Magna Charta, including Alan of Galloway, Constable of Scotland, and William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, who I believe was the Marshall of England. Enjoy your time researching. Email me with any questions. Byron N. Park It's Ok to post the email, this one also. Unfortunate there is more ancestry known about the Mary Mainwaring who married Benjamin Gill than about (my line) the one who married Gov. Robert Brooke. The Mary Mainwaring who married Gov. Brooke had a famous father, Roger Mainwaring DD, Bishop of St. David's. Unfortunately there seems to be little of his lineage available. I could use some help if people know sources who trace his lineage with any accuracy. Ive seen lines of ancestry for him but have no clue where it came from. Isuspect both lines are related but that's all. There are two books that are extremely helpful for these lines: "Ancestral Roots of Certain America Colonists Who Came to America before 1700", 8th Edition, and "The Magna Charta Surities, 1215, The Barons Named in the Magna Charta and Some of Their Descendents Who Settled in America During the Early Colonial Year" 5th Edition both by Frederick Lewis Weis and available through Amazon. Plantagenet Ancestry Vols. I, II, and III, by Douglas Richardson, is also a good source and also available through Amazon. I think there are many others who are more expert than I in this field and many other sources I do not have access to. I do know that much of the material used in family trees is incorrect. I struggled to find the correct Ann Brook, the correct Mary Mianwaring (there are several of both) and at lest three Oliver Mainwarings in a row. I use Ancestry .com's Family Tree Maker program. The little green leaf can help but be suspect of the information you find. Have a great day. Byron N. Park
