Notes
a. Note:   Source WEH page 312 & 313, Robert Henry Hendershott (Son of Henry b. 1810) The original DRUMMER BOY OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK the most noted Of early Hendershots. Born 28 Feb. 1850 Tecumseh, Lenawee Co MI went with mother to Jackson MI, enlisted in civil war June 1861 at age 10 years & 6 months. Then youngest soldier in war, was rejected as too young, re-enlisted again Oct. 1861 and went to the Front 28 Oct 1861, mustered in at West Point, KY, 1 Nov. 1861 Co. B., 9th, MI Inf., He was captured at Murfreesboro, TN, sent to Camp Chase OH, where discharged. Robert went next to Detroit MI, re-enlisted 19 Aug. 1862, joined his regiment 11 Dec. 1862 with Chaplain Taylor at Fredericksburg, VA, as drummer boy Co. B., 8th, MI Inf. He crossed the Rappahannock river where he captured by himself a Rebel soldier, was taken to General Burnside where was given three cheers for Robert Hendershott, drummer boy, by which he was made a hero, whether deserved or not. Robert was wounded 13 December 1862 in charge at Marie's Heights, was discharged for disability 22 December 1862 at Falmouth VA, sent to Washington DC, lived at home of General Burnside at Providence RI. Mr. Horace Greeley gave him the finest silver mounted drum, presented New York by General Winfield Scott. He carried this drum over 50 years and at many Grand Army of Republic encampments. Another drum given by GAP with gold-headed drumsticks was placed in state House at Lansing MI, as memorial. Robert was close friend of General John A. Logan and played the drums at the presentation of the Logan statue in Chicago, IL. There were many recommendations by famous people such as: Abraham Lincoln and Generals Grant, Meade, Doubleday, Burnside and others. Robert lived three months in White House as companion to young Tad Lincoln but Mrs. Lincoln did not approve. Next was appointed special messenger to General F. E. Spinner, head U.S. Treasury Dept., and appointed by President Lincoln to West Point Academy but was rejected on account of disability. He lived a time with Grover Cleveland, then sheriff at Buffalo WY, later appointed Post Office inspector Dakota Territory, and again railway mail clerk out of Chicago, living Inglewood. Robert and son Cleveland soon became nationally known entertainers with drum and fife, giving programs of songs and militant recitations. They traveled more than 40 years, visited every state and in Canada, Mexico and Hawaii, Australia and England, billed as Major R. H. HENDERSHOTT and Son. During these travels they gathered records of Hendershot families wherever found from which Cleveland was able to write his HOUSE OF VON HAYDERSCHATT that genealogy was placed in Newberry Library Chicago, IL. (Comment by DLG: That genealogy later researched by John Ruch proved false and inaccurate.) He lived a time in Cleveland but mostly Inglewood and Oak Park IL, applied for pension 12 Sept. 1890 and pensioned one year before death. He was member Presbyterian Church but he and son became Catholic in Hawaii. He died 26 Dec. 1925 age 75, buried Forest Park Cemetery Chicago, IL. A poem, a book and one or more pamphlets were written: Drummer Boy of the Rappahannock by Fred E. Brooks. The Brave Drummer Boy by William S. Dodge 2867, PG. 202, A civil war song and story by Frank Moore, PG. 245. Campfire Entertainment and true story by H. E. Gerry, Chicago 1899. See also censuses 1850,80,1900,10 - Cl. & Al.
