Note: N53 Obituary taken from The Edna Sun, September 12, 1929: JAMES THORNTON DIED MONDAY FUNERAL SERVICES HERE AT M. E. CHURCH TUESDAY - BURIAL AT COFFEYVILLE Was 84 Years of Age at Time of Death - A Civil War Veteran In the passing of James Thornton, another old soldier has answered the late revelle and he that fought 'neath the stars and stripes has stepped from the rank and file of what was once a powerful army. He was a good soldier, received an honorable discharge when the conflict was over, and he became a good citizen, honored and respected by all. James Thornton was born March 21, 1845 in Clinton County, Ind. and moved to Iowa when quite small. Was raised to manhood in Iowa and Nebraska and moved to Arkansas in 1860 just before the Civil War. He joined the Federal army Feb. 16, 1864, and was assigned to the 11th Missouri Cavalry. He saw one year and six months of hard servie. He was discharged July 15, 1965 at St. Louis, Mo. Mr. Thornton moved to Neosho county and settled near Erie, Kansas on a farm. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Johnson on Sept. 28, 1868. To this union six chidren were born, two dying in infancy. His wife also passed away Nov. 5, 1983 in Elk county. He was later united in marriage to Melissa C. Voorhees, who with his seven children survive him. The children are, R. J. Thornton, Edna; a grandson, Clarence who has made his home with his grand parents, and six daughters, Mrs. Henry Stinson of DeValls Bluff, Ark.; Mrs. Arthur Barnard of Nowata, Okla.; Mrs. Edward Smith of Independence; Mrs. T. H. Jameson of Wichita; Mrs. L. W. Christmore of Edna; Mrs. Edith Wilts, whose address is unknown and two step sons, Mr. F. L. Voorhees of La Feria, Tex.; and L. W. Voorhees of Wichita, Ks. One sister and one brother survive. Twenty nine grandchildren, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Sept. 10 at the Methodist church in Edna, with the Pastor, Rev. M. G. McIntosh in charge. Burial in Fairview cemetery at Coffeyville.
