Note:   1930 Federal Census for Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois - 3449 Lincoln Street - SD 0, ED 164762, Sheet 14B ____________________________________________________________________________________ Named after his uncle, Roy Francis Abell was born November 13, 1923 in Parsons, Labette Co., Kansas to Robert Bertrum and Anna Teresa (Fitzgerald) Abell. Roy was baptised at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. In 1928, at age 4, he moved with his family to Chicago. In 1930 we find Roy (6) living at 3449 Lincoln Street in Chicago with his father Robert (47), mother Anna (41), brother Paul (17), and sisters Mary Ann (12) and Gertrude (10). Roy was a graduate of St. Andrew's Catholic Grade School and Lake View High School. On February 5, 1943 Roy was inducted into the army and served as a lineman and truck driver in western Europe during World War II. He was discharged on December 13, 1945 at Camp Grant, Illinois. At age 19, Roy had a brief, wartime marriage to Virginia Legree that ended in divorce. After returning from the war, He worked for Western Electric and Weibolts Department Store. On May 10, 1948, Roy married Mary Ellen Kearney, daughter of Stanley Joseph and Clara Maria (Bisdorf) Kearney at the Germania Club in Chicago. In 1954, Roy began working for RR Donnelley & Sons in Chicago as a foreman in shipping. Being part of the suburban migration after the war, in January 1955, they bought a home in Dolton, Cook Co., Illinois where they raised their 3 boys. On their 35th wedding anniversary in 1983, Roy and Mary Ellen renewed their wedding vows at Queen of Apostles Church in Riverdale, Cook Co., Illinois. Over the years, Roy enjoyed reading, baseball, golf, an occasional road trip and a glass of beer. In 1985, Roy retired from RR Donnelley & Sons as did Mary Ellen from Ingalls Memorial Hospital. In 1988 Roy and Mary Ellen purchased a condominium and moved to Tinley Park, Cook Co., Illinois. Yhey celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998 with a dinner at the Glenwood Oaks Restaurant in Glenwood, Illinois. On November 30, 1998, Roy, age 75, passed away at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, Cook Co., Illinois from pneumonia caused by heart disease and stroke.
