He was baptised on October 7, 1883 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons, Kansas. His godmother is shown as Rosa Dillon. Rosa (22) was living with John and Susan (Abell) Buckman in Neosho Co. Her relationship to the Abell family is unknown. In 1900 Robert (16) is found in Albuquerque, NM at 917 S. Arno Street with his father, John Robert (49), a car repairer, mother, Susan Emma (39), a housewife, and siblings Curtis(15), Joseph (13), Orie (11), Mary (9), Bertha Lou (8) John James (6), and Roy (3). The family migrated west between 1897 and 1900. Robert's mother died of cholera in 1901, as did John James. Joseph died a year later in 1902. Regina, the 9th child born in 1901, was raised in an orphanage, but died just before her 9th birthday in 1910. Robert, with his brothers, received his education from the Jesuit priests. Robert returned to Kansas before 1907. On May 22, 1907 Robert married Anna Teresa Fitzgerald, daughter of Edward and Margaret (Isaacs) Fitzgerald at St. Patrick's Church in Parsons, Labette Co., Kansas by Father Athanasius Schwingler. William Curtis Abell and Mary Grealy were best man and maid of honor. In 1910 Robert and Anna are living at 1824 Kennedy Street in Parsons with their eldest son, Robert Orie. Robert registered for the 1917-1918 World War I draft in Parsons, but did not serve in the war. In 1920 Robert (36) and Anna (30) are found at 714 N. Central in Parsons with sons, Robert (11), Paul (7), and daughter Mary Ann (2). Robert is shown as a machinist with a steam railroad. He worked for the KATY Railroad. Two more children were born between 1920 and 1930, Gertrude Rita in 1920 and Roy in 1923. In 1928 the entire family moved to Chicago because of the KATY railroad strike and Robert began working for the Northwestern Railroad. In 1930 the family is residing at 3449 Lincoln Street in Chicago. Robert (47) and Anna (41) are listed with their children Paul (17), Mary Ann (12), Gertrude Rita (10) and Roy (6). Robert Orie, their eldest child, is found living in Parsons, Kansas with his aunt and uncle, John and Ellen (Fitzgerald) Wyrick. Robert remained in Chicago for the rest of his life and will be found in Chicago for the census' of 1940 and 1950. Robert Bertrum was a quiet, hardworking man. As a devout Catholic and member of the St. Andrew's Church Holy Name Society, he attended Mass regularly. Robert died on June 1, 1952 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois at age 68 from heart failure, and is buried next to Anna at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois (Grave 1, Lot 256, Section JJ).
