Anna was baptised at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons on April 10, 1889 by Father John Ward. Joseph Doyle and Agnes Loftus were Godparents. The family, originally from Missouri, moved to Parsons about 1877 from Hannibal, Marion Co., Missouri. Anna's father, Edward Fitzgerald, an ironworker, was an Irish immigrant, while her mother, Margaret (Issacs) was a housewife born in Clinton Co., Missouri. Anna (10) is found in 1900 living at 802 N. Central in Parsons with her father Edward (51), mother Margaret (46) and siblings Mary (19), Edward (16). Anna's older brother John and older sister Ellen were already married and living on their own. The 1900 census states that Anna was born in 1890. This is incorrect as 1889 is given in the church records at St. Patrick's and on Anna's death certificate. On May 22, 1907 Anna married Robert Bertrum Abell, son of John Robert and Susan Emma (Beaven) Abell at St. Patrick's Church in Parsons, Labette Co., Kansas. William Curtis Abell and Mary Grealy were best man and maid of honor. In 1910 Anna (21) and Robert (27) are found living at 1824 Kennedy Street in Parsons with their eldest son, Robert Orie (2). By 1920 Anna (30) and Robert (36) are found at 714 N. Central in Parsons with sons, Robert (11), Paul (7), and daughter Mary Ann (2). Anna is shown as keeping house. Two more children were born between 1920 and 1930, Gertrude Rita in 1920 and Roy in 1923. In 1928 the family moved to Chicago because of the KATY railroad strike and Robert began working for the Northwestern Railroad. In 1930 the family is residing at 3449 Lincoln Street in Chicago. Robert (47) and Anna (41) are listed with their children Paul (17), Mary Ann (12), Gertrude Rita (10) and Roy (6). Robert Orie, their eldest child, is found living in Parsons, Kansas with his uncle and aunt, John and Ellen (Fitzgerald) Wyrick. Anna sometimes visited her family in Parsons and her sister, Mary, in Coffeyville. On the death of her brother, Edward, Anna bought gravestones for her parents and Edward at Calvary Cemetery in Parsons. After Robert's death in 1952, Anna lived with her daughter, Gertrude Rita, and helped raise her grandsons, Joseph and Thomas DiGanci. At the end of her life, Anna suffered from alzheimers disease, was hospitalized at the Riviera Nursing Home, and passed away on August 11, 1971 in Chicago Heights, Cook Co., Illinois at age 82, from renal failure and arteriosclerosis. Anna is buried next to Robert in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois. (Grave 2, Lot 256, Section JJ)
