"Polly" (Mattingly) Abell. He was baptised on May 15, 1853 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Nelson Co., Kentucky by his great uncle, Rev. Robert A. Abell. JR's mother's sister, Elisa Ann (Mattingly) Heady, is shown as his baptismal sponsor. In 1860, JR (8) is found on a farm near Hodgenville, Larue Co., Kentucky with his mother, Mary (43), siblings Thomas (17), James (16), Elizabeth (11), Jemima (5), and Mary Teresa (2). Robert Abell, JR's father, passed away December 29, 1859. In 1870, JR is shown as a 17 year old farmhand with his mother, Mary (47), Jemima (14), and Mary (12). On October 24, 1882 JR married Susan Emma Beaven, daughter of James E. and Mary E. (Simms) Beaven in Neosho Co., Kansas. The Marriage Bond is dated October 23, 1882 with the marriage taking place the following day (Volume D, Page 53, Neosho Co., Kansas Courthouse). Both John Robert and Susan Emma had family in Neosho Co. and came there after their parent's deaths. There is evidence they knew each other in Kentucky through close family marriages. All the children of JR and Susan Emma were born in either South Mound, Neosho Co. or Parsons, Labette Co., Kansas, except, Regina, born in 1901 in Albuquerque. In 1900 JR (49), a car repairer, is found in Albuquerque, NM at 917 S. Arno Street with Susan Emma (39) and children Robert (16), Curtis(15), Joseph (13), Orie (11), Mary (9), Bertha Lou (8) John James (6), and Roy (3). The family migrated west between 1897 and 1900. In 1901 Susan passed away and left JR to raise all the children. Joseph and John James died soon after. He had the boys educated by the Jesuits and Regina was put in an orphanage. In 1910 Regina died and JR eventually returned to St. Paul in Neosho Co., Kansas. In 1920, JR, now 67, is widowed and living at 133 West Jefferson Street in St. Paul. In 1930 at age 77, John R is still living in St. Paul. Between 1930 and 1939, JR returned to Bernalillo Co., New Mexico where he passed away on March 9, 1939 at age 86. JR's daughter Bertha Lou, now Sister Regina Marie, was there in New Mexico at the end of his life. Regina was a hospital nurse in Sante Fe. JR's death is confirmed in the New Mexico Death Index. JR is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., New Mexico.
