Mathias was a house painter by trade. After his wife's death in 1901 he lived with his daughter, Gertrude, and her husband James Shearin. Mathias became a naturalized citizen. He owned the houses at 932 George St. and 1433 School St. Mathias liked to make wine and drew people around him as he held a large bunch bowl on his lap and passed out tastes. The 1900 census says that he and Elizabeth were married 26 years which places their marriage about 1874. Mathias is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery on North Clark Street in Chicago with his wife, his sisters-in-law Chatrina and Josephine, and grandson, Thomas Shearin. Only Elizabeth's name appears on the grave stone.
