He was baptised on October 28, 1888 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons, Labette Co., Kansas by Father John Ward. Sophia Rummens was his Godmother. In 1900, Orie (11) is found in Albuquerque, NM at 917 S. Arno Street with his father, John Robert (49), a car repairer, mother, Susan Emma (39), a housewife, and siblings Robert (16), Curtis (15) Joseph (13), Mary (9), Bertha Lou (8) John James (6), and Roy (3). The family migrated west between 1897 and 1900. Orie's mother died of cholera in 1901. The boys were sent to the Jesuits for their education. It must have been here that Orie found his vocation to become a Jesuit priest. He joined the Jesuits and began his studies on July 28, 1906, just before his 18th birthday. Orie registered for the 1917-1918 World War I draft in Denver, Colorado where he must have been studying. The church records of St. Patrick's in Parsons state that Orie was ordained in the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in June 1919 at Woodstock. In 1920, Orie (31) is found as a student, living at Woodstock College in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland. In 1930, Orie now 41, is a teacher at Loyola University in New Orleans. Father Orie was an Abell Family historian and much of what I have and Vic Abell has comes from him. His work spanned a few decades and is a great help in locating and verifying information that is now so easily obtained with computerization. In various records, Orie Leo is sometimes reversed to Leo Orie. Father Orie always used the name "Orie" in Christmas cards we received from him. The Spring Hill records show his name spelled, Orrie. Father Orie passed away on February 14, 1971 at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Mobile Co., Alabama at age 82. He is buried in Spring Hill College Jesuit Cemetery in Mobile, Mobile Co., Alabama. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Social Security Death Index Name: ORIE ABELL SSN: 418-70-5408 Last Residence: 36608 Mobile, Mobile, AL Born: 2 Sep 1888 Last Benefit: Died: Feb 1971 State (Year) SSN issued: AL (1966) Birthdate from the 1917-1918 World War I draft registration records says September 3rd.
