Arno St., Precinct 26, SD 170, ED 18, Sheet 14 ____________________________________________________________________________________ Often referred to as Emma, Susan Emma Beaven was born November 27, 1859 in Marion Co., Kentucky to James Ervin and Mary Eleanor (Simms) Beaven. Emma first appears in the 1860 census as a 6/12 year old female with her father James E. (34), Mary E. (32), and siblings Mary (12), Melvina (10), Lucretia (8), and James C. (3). The last named was misspelled as " Biven" in 1860. In 1870, the census taker made errors (ie. James E. Beaven is John E. Biven) but the entire family is there and makes sense as compared to 1860 and 1880. By 1880 her mother passed away and Emma (20) is keeping house and enumerated with her father, J.E. Beaven (50), and siblings John (18), Joseph (16), and Julia (13). In July 1880 Emma's father died leaving the children orphans. Emma moved to Neosho Co., Kansas where her sister, Mary, and Mary's husband, Samuel Leander Abell, lived. On October 24, 1882 Emma married John Robert Abell, son of Robert A. and Mary A. "Polly" (Mattingly) Abell in Neosho Co., Kansas. The Marriage Bond is dated October 23, 1882 with the marriage taking place the following day (Volume D, Page 53, Neosho Co., Kansas Courthouse). Samuel Leander Abell, Emma's brother-in-law, was a second cousin to John Robert. Another second cousin to John Robert, Albert Ignatius and his wife, Amanda (Luckett) Abell are also living in Neosho County at the time. It is possible that Emma and John Robert knew each other in Kentucky before migrating to Kansas. All the children of JR and Susan Emma were born in South Mound, Neosho Co., or Parsons, Labette Co., except, Regina, born in 1901 in Albuquerque. In 1900 Emma (39), a housekeeper, is found in Albuquerque, NM at 917 S. Arno Street with her husband, John Robert (49) and children Robert (16), Curtis(15), Joseph (13), Orie (11), Mary (9), Bertha Lou (8) John James (6), and Roy (3). The family migrated west between 1897 and 1901. On November 8, 1901 Susan Emma, age 41, passed away during a cholera epidemic in Albuquerque leaving all the children to be raised by John Robert. At that time, Regina, the youngest child, was only 2 1/2 months old. Susan Emma is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., New Mexico. (Section SB-SE)
