Abell was born about 1816 in Washington Co., Kentucky, son of James Samuel and Elizabeth (Mattingly) Abell. Robert grew up on the family farm in Hart Co., Kentucky. On October 20, 1840 Robert married Mary A. "Polly" Mattingly, daughter of Thomas R. and Jemima "Minnie" (Hunter) Mattingly. Their marriage bond is dated 19 October 1840 with the wedding performed the following day by Father Robert A. Abell. Mary was given by the consent of her father, Thomas Mattingly (Information from the marriage books in the Nelson Co., Kentucky Courthouse). In 1850, Robert is found in Grayson Co., Kentucky as a 32 year old, Kentucky born farmer worth $450.00. Enumerated with him is his wife, Mary (31), and children Thomas (7), James (5), and Elizabeth (1). In addition to those children already listed, John Robert was born in 1852, Jemima in 1855 and Mary Teresa in 1858. The ages of Robert and Mary are suspect in the 1850 census. In 1860, Mary is shown as being 43, which is correct. On December 29, 1859, Robert died from typhoid fever on their farm near Hodgenville, Larue Co., Kentucky (Death information found in the Larue County Courthouse). The cemetery or place of Robert's burial is not known at this time.
