Note: (Research):There is much controversy over Augustus and Jasper Banks....are they the same man? Yes, they are! Augustus was my great grandfather. He was born Jasper A Banks, sometime by 1900 he had changed his name to a Augustus Banks. He is buried in Bee Tree, NC at a little church called Swannanoa Presbyterian. My aunt remembers him well. She said all of the grandchildren called him grandpap. He was a black smith. It is true that he did not want to go fight in the war so he changed his name. Because of this name change it has made it difficult for anyone to trace Augustus. In my research I have found that the Applachian People had an enormous amount of generousity and hospitality in their genes. It was just their natural instinct to help anyone. My aunt said Gus was a good man and worked very hard. Augustus made his headstone for his grave. Gus wanted everyone from all around to be able to see the headstone. Over the years the concrete of the headstone has crumbled and a new headstone was put in its place. I am trying to locate the family member who purchased the new head stone. If you have any info of who did this, I would love to know.
