NC Living w/mother Frances Banks. 1860 Census Buncombe Co NC, (pag. 336) Ivy and Flat Creek Div. Henry Banks, WM age 21, Farmer, personal estate $15.00, b. NC Living w/him: wife Laura and dautghter Lovada. On 23 July 1862, Pvt. Henry C. Banks enlisted in Co K , 25th Infantry Regiment at Democrat, NC. He was present with them 31 Aug 1862 at Rapidan Station, Va, apparently in rear support during the battles of 2nd Bull Run, late Aug 1862. They joined Robert E. Lee's march northward to Maryalnd, and participated at the bloody battle of Antietam, MD. 17 Sept. 1862, defending the western woods. On 31 Oct 1862, Henry was listed present with the regiment. Having returned to VA, they were at Culpeper on 8 Nov. Henry was wounded in the back at the battle of Frederricksburg on 31 Dec 1862. He was with them on 28 Feb 1863 at Wilmington, NC. Likewise he was with them 30 Jun 1863 near Richmond, VA, joining the bulk of Lee's army that had been resisting Ulysses Grant's march down the center of VA. On 23 Jul 1863, he deserted without apparently going inside Union lines. (The citizens of Buncombe Co. were generally unfavorable to both sides in the Civil War.) Listed as age 23, from Buncombe Co He was pardoned from E.D. M. Prison, Richmond, VA by President Jefferson Davis for joiningthe Winder Legion to defend Richmond from the raid by General Philip Sheridan, 3-Aug-1864. NC Living w/him: wife Laura J. and son Douglas. Also present: grandchildren: William H., Vernon N and Mattie J. Anders. In 22 Oct 1902 voter registration list, Buncombe Co. NC was HC Banks, age 65. 1910 Census Buncombe Co, NC ED 23, pg 7, Ivy Twp. 1. Henry Banks, WM age 70 1st marriage, m'd 52 yrs, farmer, b. NC parents b.
